Born against the industrial backdrop of Cincinnati, Ohio, Paul is descended from a long line of German woodworkers and engineers. His grandfather built airplanes for the U.S. military and his father is a manufacturing engineer for Union Carbide. Paul views his projects as a fusion of his family's distant and recent histories. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in Industrial Design, he moved to New York City where he apprenticed under furniture creator John Davies. His talent earned him a roster of clients and the attention of Williams Sonoma and Martha Stewart, leading him to set up his own laboratory in Brooklyn. Paul believes that design must balance between the continuity of recognizable imagery and the poetic shift of innovation.
