Design Story: Cache Box

Designer Kenyon Yeh shares the process of developing his first design for Areaware from the point of initial inspiration to the final product.

A quiet moment on a sunlit basketball court sparked the idea for the Cache Box. Inspired by how a basketball rolls across the surface—effortless, smooth, and deliberate—gave me the inspiration of a new way to think about how a simple motion can be shaped into a product for Areaware.

That’s how the Cache Box started. It has a round handle that slides across the top, just like a basketball rolling on the court. Opening the box feels easy and smooth, like moving the ball with your hand. It's sized for easy fingertip control, making the motion playful.

The idea is to present two different sizes, a rectangular version (full court) with a center handle that slides left and right to open drawers on each side, and a square version (half court) with smaller quick access. Both sizes turn everyday storage into a playful moment for keeping your daily bits and bobs organized and easily accessible.

Each part is a different color, adding a fun and playful touch that makes the box feel cheerful and unique. This colorful combination turns an everyday object into something special, bringing joy to small routines and making storage feel like a little celebration.

This minimalist and colorful storage box artfully hides away a myriad of things, from loose change to love notes. Insert small items through the slot on top or slide open the drawer with its knob to tuck them away. It's useful in the kitchen, bathroom, or on your desktop—and so aesthetically pleasing, it's a cache you won't want to clear.
